What is World Environment Day?
It is celebrated on June 5th every year with a focus on a different environmental issue. The idea was first proposed by the United Nations General Assembly at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It was first celebrated in 1974 with the theme, “Only One Earth”. With the ongoing issues of global warming and the effects of climate change rippling throughout the world, environmental issues should be something that we should all be thinking about. The ozone is continuing to deplete. The icebergs melting. The average temperature is rising in nearly every continent.
These are all things that impact us. We should all care. While it may seem daunting, there is always something we can do to make a difference. Change, no matter how small, is still change.
How do I celebrate World Environment Day?
Get involved. The 2023 theme is #BeatPlasticPollution. You can choose to follow along with the current theme and their movement through https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/, or you can choose to focus on environmental issues within your own community.
Some ideas to get you started:
Use reusable water bottles or coffees mugs instead of disposable ones
Change to energy-saving light bulbs
Organize a community clean up; roadside, beach, etc
Planting trees
Creating a community garden
Collect donations for items needed at homeless shelters, schools, etc
Creating a community recycling center
Teaching ways to be mindful of the environment by recycling, reusing, and donating materials
Create an alternative transportation program.
