World Mental Health Day Japan 2024

World Mental Health Day Japan 2024

Mental health has come to the forefront of many important conversations in the last few decades.  What was once something that held so many stigmas and was seen as something shameful has now become a form of liberation for those who struggle with issues ranging from anxiety to personality disorders.  While we have come a long way in understanding mental health, a better understanding of what it entails helps us to protect our mental health and empathize with others. World Mental Health Day Japan 2024

What is mental health?  According to the CDC, mental health “includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.  Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood” (CDC).  Mental health impacts not only your emotions but can negatively impact your physical health over time.  Due to the importance of mental health and the negative view mental health has had in many countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced World Mental Health Day in 1992.  It is celebrated every October 10th.  World Mental Health Day was created to “raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts to support mental health” (WHO).

The theme for 2024 is It's time to prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.”  Now that the conversation has become more mainstream, workplaces have begun to recognize the importance of mental health as it can impact work performance.  Your mental health matters just as much as your immediate physical health.  I know that it’s easier said than done with the state of the world, but prioritizing your mental health should be a conscious daily choice.  Every situation you’re facing is temporary.  You’ll have the body you have for the rest of your life, so be sure to invest in yourself.

Here are some ways you can prioritize your mental health while celebrating the day:

  • Have a self-care day; do something relaxing

  • See a therapist; there’s nothing shameful about seeing a therapist. Life isn’t always kind; sometimes, we create defense mechanisms to combat unkind things. Therapy can help you address things you are unprepared to handle alone.

  • Eat healthier

  • Move your body; take a walk, go on a hike

  • Go out into nature (that is, if you don’t have allergies)
